Focus and Scope

PALARA is the journal of the Afro-Latin/American Research Association (ALARA). ALARA is a dynamic organization of individual scholars working in the field of Afro-Latin American Studies. A majority of the membership are college/university professors trained in Latin American studies (literature, linguistics, sociology, political science, cultural studies, communication studies, history, etc.) whose research and/or teaching interests focus on cultural production and materiality of Africa descendants in North, Central and South America, the Caribbean basin and Equatorial Guinea (West Africa). http://alarascholars.org/

ARTICLES

Manuscripts must include an abstract of 100-200 words. The abstract should provide the major objectives, methods used, findings, and conclusions. The abstract should not include references or footnotes.

Reviews of single works should have a maximum of 800 words; reviews that compare 2 or more works may be up to 1,500 words.

Peer Review Process

Peer Review Process

  • All manuscripts will be reviewed by peer reviewers who are experts in the field of African Diaspora Studies. Specific references which would identify the author(s) should be deleted for the blind-review process.
  • Manuscripts must be original work of the author(s) and not be submitted simultaneously for publication in other journals or books.
  • Manuscripts should conform to the latest style manual of the individual discipline and may not exceed twenty-five (25) pages (text) in length.
  • The minimum number of text pages is eighteen (18). 
  • Manuscripts should be submitted as a Word document, double-spaced in 12-point font, with one-inch margins, and numbered pages.
  • In addition to the title page of the manuscript, submissions should include an additional title page which lists the author(s) and designates the following information for each author: email address, phone number(s), and address. If the first author is not the corresponding author, that should be indicated.

Publication Frequency

This journal is published once per year in the fall.

 

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. All articles are available as a pdf-file free of charge.

 

Reviewer Guidelines

 Reviewers will first need to create a profile on the journal site:  https://journals.tdl.org/palara/index.php/palara/user/register.  Only the fields with an asterisk are required.  In the last step, “Confirmation Register as”, be sure to check the “Reviewer” box.  Once you have filled out the required sections, click on the “Register” button.

Reviewers will receive an email notifying them that they have been selected to review an article.  This email contains the title and abstract of the article under review, the deadline for the reviewer to acknowledge the request and the date the review is due.   Follow the quick link (Submission URL) which takes you directly to the “Review” page of the relevant submission.

On the Review page of the submission, you will see some brief information about the submission and the Review schedule including the due date of the review. Further down the Review page, you will see the Five Review steps which need to be followed.

Step 1: To accept the request, click on the “Will do the Review” link and send the email message that is generated. To decline the request, click on the “Unable to do the Review” link and send the email message that is generated.

Step 2:  Click on the file name to download the submitted article for your review as well as any supplementary files.

Step 3:  To enter your review, click on the Review Form” link.

Step 4:   If you wish to upload the manuscript with your comments, use the “Upload files” tool. (Optional)

Step 5:  Select a recommendation from the dropdown menu.

To conclude the review, click on the “Submit Review to Editor” button.  Upon submitting the review, you will be asked if you are sure you wish to continue.  Once you have recorded the decision you will not be able to make any changes to the review.  At this point, an email message will also be provided, informing the Editor of the review completion.
